Dalton Buchanan

Henderson County

Dalton Buchanan.JPG

There are so very many incredible people in Henderson County, and one that goes above and beyond is their 3rd Chair, Dalton Buchanan. Dalton has held this position for 2 terms and oversees communications. He has spent the past several years cleaning up our website and streamlining printed materials. Dalton and his team create graphics for large signs, social media posts, candidate design support and many other features that have been vital to connecting with the Henderson community. He also manages Henderson’s social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and Threads, as well as videos for TikTok and YouTube. Dalton is also the president of the Young Dems of Henderson County and most recently encouraged that group to purchase a billboard for one month long prior to Election Day to use for our messaging purposes. Additionally, Dalton and his husband regularly attend events and festivals. They encourage other young folks to join and volunteer and have succeeded in that mission. Leslie Carey the chair of henderson says: “I just can’t see how our County Party to have grown in record numbers over these past years without the power of a strong communications leader.”  Congratulations Dalton.

Julie Montanea - Buncombe County

Since moving to Asheville in 2004, Julie served as Treasurer for eleven committees – 8 candidates, an affiliate group, a statewide PAC, and NC11.  She has mentored new treasurers and helped write NCDP’s new Treasurer’s Handbook (2024).  She has served as Buncombe's Precinct 5.1 Chair from 2/2015 through 4/2024; grew sustained precinct “Turf Captain” team.  She has been an active member of Buncombe's Data Support Team since 2017, helping grow proactive countywide precinct-centered approach. Julie co-leads the new NC11 District Data Support Network, and has developed a wonderful program for coordinating District volunteers for 2024 Mountain State Fair.  Julie's comment says it all: “Serving as Precinct Chair gave me the foundation I needed as a Data Team member to offer experience-based support.  I love helping our county officers and precinct leaders use data and our tech tools to find and mobilize volunteers, get neighbors out to vote.”

Tim Curtis - Cherokee County

Tim Curtis was nominated for his longstanding commitment to making the county Democratic Party more visible in the community and educating all citizens about bringing change to Washington and electing local Democrats. Tim has been instrumental in helping the county party achieve their goal of reaching out to Democrats in Cherokee County, maintaining a permanent headquarters and urging all members to become more involved.  Tim’s knowledge of the community and its challenges has helped the Executive Board address visibility and support the party’s activities.  Tim currently serves as County Party second Vice chair, an office he assumed somewhat reluctantly when the executive Board was formed in this very important election year.  Tim supports the leadership of the party with his time, his talents and his money. Tim’s reserved manner and his ability to engage others has energized our Coffee Talk Tuesdays, candidate events and monthly Open Houses. Tim enjoys talking with everyone about the national, state-wide and local candidates and debating controversial topics. Tim quietly helps with setting up for the meetings and events and make sure all details are covered. The Cherokee County Democratic Party members are grateful to Tim for his hard work, loyalty and commitment to a brighter future for every American

Joseph Elliot Henderson.jpg

Joe Elliot - Henderson County

We are honoring Joseph Elliot for being one of the finest examples of leadership in Henderson County. Joe has always been intrigued with current events and US History. In 2018, he was asked to manage Scott Donaldson's campaign and became a more active volunteer with the Democratic Party following that. Joe was the HCDP Secretary and then expanded into candidate recruitment, candidate support, and the messaging team. Joe then developed the Civic Advocacy Network, aka CAN. This group regularly attends meetings across the county to include Commissioner, School Board and City. Joe, along with others, often speak at these meetings to address local issues. He is the main reason why our elected officials hear a voice of rationale!  Joe and his wife, Paula, recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary; they have 2 daughters and 4 grandchildren. Like many of us, Joe is involved because he thinks the people running our country need to be the best of who we are. He isn’t only involved for himself or his family, but for his community and his country. Henderson County thanks you and honors you for being an instrumental person to all that we have achieved since you have joined.

There is only one Myrtle Schrader! Over her many years of service to the Jackson County Democratic Party she has served in a variety of capacities. She is currently the President of the Jackson County Democratic Women, the group most responsible for event planning, poll greeting, headquarters staffing, fundraising, and much more. This is not the first time she has held this position, but she has announced it will be her last. Myrtle’s role as facility manager may be her most impactful. She relishes her self-adopted title of “janitor,” which greatly undersells her duties. She has transformed our headquarters over the years into a welcoming, clean, and vibrant bastion of democracy. Never one to shy away from sharing her opinion, Myrtle has been at the center of decision making for the party, pushing us all to give more and do more. You will not find a greater champion of women’s rights, or someone more passionate about leaving a better world for those that follow. While her retirement from leadership is well deserved, we will continue to look to her for inspiration and mentorship. Thank you for your many years of service, the irreplaceable, Myrtle.

Roy Osborn - Jackson County

Roy Osborn Jackson.jpg

A celebration of Myrtle would not be complete without a simultaneous celebration of her partner and confidant, Roy Osborn. Roy too has held a variety of positions within the part over the years. He has served as the treasurer of the Jackson County Democratic Men, but most importantly, as our resident fix it man. Roy is responsible for bringing Myrtle’s vision for our headquarters to reality. Whether it be the billboard, little library, signs, lights, paint, flags, whatever, Roy is the one that gets it done. He was perhaps the party’s most important member during COVID. Thanks to Roy’s expertise in all things technology, he installed our now indispensable remote meeting system. Although it’s most entertaining use may have been to watch the news of Trump’s 34 convictions live when it interrupted our Wesley Harris meet and greet. Roy has also served as the Chief Judge at the Cullowhee Precinct (our largest and arguably most important precinct) for many years now. A post that he has unfortunately been forced to relinquish for him to now serve on the Jackson County Board of Elections. A well- deserved post for one of our most trusted election experts. We know Roy will continue the Board’s long history of excellence and transparency.

Christine Waske - Macon County

Chris moved to Macon County NC in 2016. She joined the local Indivisible and Democratic Women’s groups and led a Voter Registration drive.  She has participated in various fundraisers for the Democratic Women and Democratic Party of Macon County 2017-2024. She served as Vice Chair for local Precinct 2019-2020.  Currently, Chris is committee lead for annual Fundraisers for Democratic Women in 2023-2024.  She has been instrumental in the  2024 Get Out the Vote/Billboard Committee as lead.  Recently she was an assistant to the Rally for Women’s Health for Adam Tebrugge campaign for State Senate 2024. Chris has led the county through a successful 2023 Campaign Finance audit for the Macon Democratic Women Club.  She is currently the admin for Facebook and Instagram pages for Democratic Women of Macon County and serves as Treasurer for the Democratic Women of Macon County - 2019 to present

Bruce "Buz" Buzogany - McDowell County

Bruce "Buz" Buzogany, the McDowell Democratic Party awardee for the Liston B Ramsey award, was a beloved member of the community who left a lasting impact on those around him. His passing on April 9, 2024, was deeply felt by his devoted wife of 37 years, Beth, his married daughter Sarah, and his married son Charley. Buz's compassion, intelligence, and dedication to improving the lives of others serve as an enduring inspiration for community involvement and appreciation for the outdoors in McDowell County.

Rick P. Gougeon - Mitchell County

RICK GOUGEON Mitchell.jpg

January 30, 1951 – May 13, 2024 Rick can only be described as a force of nature. The flow of solutions, fixes, remedies, and ideas from Rick’s ceaselessly churning mind made him not one in a million, but one of a kind. He was deeply compelled to improve his world by building communities and encouraging others to care about each other and our imperiled environment. Rick had a well-earned reputation for helping others in a myriad of ways and was greatly respected by those who knew him. He earned a BA from Michigan State University and an MBA from UNC Charlotte. A jack-of-all-trades and a master of most of them, he had many jobs and careers over the decades. He worked in marketing, retail management and sales, real estate, construction, and started several small businesses, including Little Switzerland Books and Beans. His unique vision and eye for detail are found throughout the shop and in the many houses he built and remodeled across western North Carolina, his adopted home. He was a loyal member of the Mitchell Democratic Party and one of our constant fundraisers. In lieu of a ceremony, Rick held a wake with his family in April. Rick asks that you lift the parting glass and celebrate your loved ones while they’re still alive. Send flowers to the living, vote Democrat, and stop using single-use plastics. Rick P. Gougeon, beloved husband, dad, papa, and Old Goat, passed away at home on May 13, 2024 at the age of 73 after being dealt a bad hand (cancer).

Marvine Cole - Swain County

In 2018 Marvine answered Governor Coopers call to help break the super majority. She signed up with a Jackson/Swain collaboration to canvass the rural communities that rarely see canvassers and are often overlooked by national campaigns. Marvie's hours of volunteer door knocking helped Joe Sam Queen oust the Neo-Confederate Oath Keeper, Mike Clampitt. That effort helped flip a seat and break the GOP super majority. Since 2018 Marvine has held a variety of roles in the Swain county party including chairing the Almond Precinct, serving on the cluster committee, and taking on the responsibilities of 3rd vice chair. Just last week Marvine was again out knocking doors in Swain County to build support for Mark Burrows and Adam Tebrugge, again working to break a GOP super majority in Raleigh. In addition to her crucial work organizing our county Marvine consistently steps up to contribute to any project the county takes on. Whether she's addressing personalized post cards or handing out Halloween candy, Marvine persists; showing up for our party and her community.

Elaine Slocumb - Swain County

Elaine Slocumb Jackson.jpg

Since arriving in WNC Elaine has mentored Nursing students, volunteered as a Guardian Ad Litem, volunteered as a nurse for the local free clinic and served on the Clinic Board. She currently sits on the board of restoration house  and is a community representative voice at the health department. In 2017 Elaine joined the local branch of Indivisible to protect the ACA from Republican attack. Working with Indivisible she was on the committee that organized the 2023 Swain County Health Forum & Fair. Elaine has been involved with the SCDP starting in 2016. She has worked the voting polls for several cycles. In 2020 Elaine agreed to serve as a precinct chair and has since stepped up to lead the Swain County Precinct Cluster. In addition to her leadership at the precinct level she has lent the county party her skills in statistical analysis, delving into vote builder data sets. Elaine has served as delegate to the county and district conventions. In addition to these formal roles Elaine has been a public voice advocating for Swain County's LGBTQIA+ community. At a time when Swain County Commissioners were on the attack, targeting LGBTQIA+ books in our library and schools, and our representatives in Raleigh were filing the NC 'Don't Say Gay' bill, Elaine made forceful arguments for acceptance and inclusions in letters to the editor and public forums. Swain County is lucky to have the benefit of her skills, intelligence, and courage.

Vanessa Cowie - Transylvania County

In 2021 Vanessa Cowie began editing the Transylvania County newsletter. She continues and will be encouraged to do so as long as she lives in our fair county. We began with a few subscribers and now have almost 1000 raving fans. Vanessa was an integral part of our record setting turnout of Democratic voters in 2022 midterm elections.

Doug Harris - Transylvania County

Doug Harris Transylvania.jpg

Doug Harris joined our team in 2022 and became a key player coordinating our volunteers, acting a TCDP’s contact with local and regional candidates. When Mark Robinson came to Transylvania spewing his vitriol, Doug played a key role in organizing our first Freedom Festival which attracted about 200 attendees. He was crucial to the planning and success of our 2nd Annual Freedom Festival in 2023 which was attended by 300 people from all over WNC.

Julia Kennerly - Transylvania County

Julia Kennerly is the former chair of Transylvania County Democratic Party and a trusted advisor of our Executive Board. She recruits poll workers as well as serving as a Precinct Chair. She trains canvassing volunteers every month and also  regularly canvasses her own precinct. Julia Kennerly is the model of “engaged Democrat”.

Peggy Reed  - Transylvania County

Julia Kennerly Transylvania.jpg

Peggy Reed currently serves as our 1st Vice Chair. She began as a Precinct Chair and Secretary of the county party. She worked tirelessly with last year’s Liston B Ramsey winner to organize TCDP on google drive. She then stepped up to 2nd Vice Chair when the former officer moved out of state. Our Executive Board reorganized and she was elected 1st Vice Chair where she has energized our precincts. Hollywood named a movie after Peggy Reed, “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once”.

Sam Stites - Transylvania County

If your hair is gray and your face is wrinkled like the Chair of TranscoDems (Sam Edney) then you probably have had concerns about our young Democrats. Sam Stites is the future and the future is in good hands. Sam believes in canvassing so much that he began training our canvassers one Saturday each month in 2023 and has committed to continue through the 2024 elections. He has worked diligently with our NCDP and our Regional Organizing Director, Michael Careccia to get Dems knocking the RIGHT doors.
